Re: Trying to find a Dallin Oaks quote

Maybe this:

https://newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.or ... ses-of-god
The denial of God or the downplaying of His role in human affairs, which began in the Renaissance, has become pervasive today.

Re: Q12 leading the church

What would inquiring minds think if 2-4 presidents/prophets died in a single year? I think normal people would say that the model that transitions the role of church dictator to the next oldest guy in the org probably isn't the best model to use. I know it's longest tenured and that doesn't ...

Re: NOMference Fall 2025 Sat morning!!!

It was this weird story about someone being emotional and probably verbally abusive (they didn't use the word abusive, but that's what it sounded like) to kids in a family and the family decided to be nice to them and then the abusive person magically became nice back. So the counsel was to ...

Re: If I was the PR Director of the Church…

I would introduce the term limits for apostleship. Even ignoring the out of touch angle a softer angle that would be more palatable for orthodox members could be allowing more voices in the church to be heard. How many general conference talks has Oaks given? I'm guessing over 100 general ...

Re: RMN

I think that's just cult of personality stuff but in Mormonism the cult of personality doesn't center around an individual, it centers around a calling. The person that currently holds the calling is the center of attention and when someone else is called into the venerated position, the new guy ...

Re: Active shooter at church in Michigan

From article: had lived in Utah and had a relationship with a woman involved in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. During their conversation, Sanford told him he had his tattoos removed to take part in church ceremonies. Sounds to me like he may have attended/joined. If so it sounds ...

Re: President Nelson has Died

I honestly don't know how I'm going to abide Oaks. This is probably it for me. To be sure, that writing has been on the wall for a long time but it still is difficult to face when the time came. Not looking forward to an even more legalistic, conservative, bigoted church. I wonder if they'll play a ...

Re: Keeping up with Trump

For what it's worth, Alex Jones' phone turned out to be full of transgender porn. There's a lot of complex weirdness going on in these guys. Someday we'll better recognize the strong association between homo/trans phobia and self-hating closeted LGBT people. There sure have been a lot of LGBT ...

Re: Biggest changes in the church in your lifetime

The thread title put me in the mindset of coming up with the biggest change to the overall church experience on any given Sunday or activity night. I'd say the move from peppering church meetings throughout the day such that it consumed an entire Sunday to moving to block schedules and eventually ...

Re: Make Lying Un-American.... Again?

The challenge is that people can't tell truth from fiction. I think it's more obvious and in your face these days but people have always had that problem. No doubt there are bad actors that intentionally lie. Then you have misinformed people that lie unintentionally. Then there's the people with ...

Re: when did you earn God's love? Apologies to Fluffy

It's not possible to earn MORmON god's love. No matter what you do, you're never good enough when it comes to MORmONism. This was my experience. I'm a convert so pre-mission experience with church culture is limited but this sentiment definitely started during my mission years and would continue ...

Nelson holding up extremely well for a 100 year old. He's also the only one speaking to something semi-relevant to what's going on in the world today. Of course I'd appreciate more specifics but given the nothing that we've heard so far, at least dancing around the issues brings the issues closer to ...

I found myself wanting to know more about what happened to the family of the person that was killed.

I get that it was his story, but he wasn't the true victim of that incident.

Re: NOMference Spring 2025 Sunday afternoon!!!!

Irreverence isn't what is misleading the rising generation. The poor example of religious adherents is what is causing the rising generation to leave religion behind. But he ain't going to talk about that.
