Trying to find a Dallin Oaks quote

My memory, which is sometimes reliable tells me that Dallin Oaks once spoke about the Middle Ages as a time when men relied on faith and that since the Renaissance and the Enlightenment society has been going downhill. Does anyone else recall this, and know where it might be found?

Founding Fathers

I see posts online of people talking about how God 'called' the Founding Fathers to set up the USA. I occasionally reply: "Do you realize that men that you believe were called by God, namely Franklin, Washington, Jefferson, Madison and many others were deists. Ask yourself, why did God call deists ...

What are the odds?

I have had success discussing my critical views of the LDS church using this perspective- I could be wrong. I explain that I honestly believe that there is a possibility that the Church could be true. Yes, I honestly believe, with my understanding of the limitations of the human mind that that is a ...

Living in a Bi-Polar society

Growing up in Rexburg, I was indoctrinated into a essentially mono-cultural society- 95% LDS. On my mission I was exposed to a poly-cultural society in southern California. The current society in the USA seems to be largely bi-cultural, and even worse, the extremes of each culture are getting the ...

Re: Q12 leading the church

Interesting. Those three bodies (FP, Q12, Q70) should each get one vote. No, the RS presidency and primary and YW presidency all need one vote also. That way, women have equal say to all the men in the church. And if there are any disagreements, then that group’s vote is just canceled. Because I am ...

Re: Q12 leading the church

Here's my 2 cents: Pres. Oaks suspects he may die soon, like within a year. If he makes himself president with new councilors and dies within a year it implies that God had to take him out, for whatever reason. Also Holland and Eyring are in the same boat. What would inquiring minds think if 2-4 ...

Re: US Military used for ICE

I just watched the Steven Miller "the president has plenary authority" gaffe on youtube. I had to look up plenary authority, which means unlimited authority. A lot of people are concerned about a president and cabinet which may be be discussing that concept as realistic. I am certain that trump does ...

Re: If I was the PR Director of the Church…

Pres. Nelson came across, to me anyway, an insecure dude who was looking for a way to stand out. So he made the big deal about temples.
I'm not sure what Oaks thing will be. But we know he HATES criticism.

Has any speaker mentioned Charlie Kirk specifically yet? I'm just wondering if they are leary of mentioning a different religious figure.

I saw that Rand Paul objected to trump blasting random suspicious boats in the Caribbean, but no republican yet has objected to trump using the armed forces unconstitutionally. Wow. A lot of this new to me. Is that in the Joseph Smith Papers? the McLellin papers? I had heard accounts of people being drunk on sacrement wine because they were fasting, but Samuel Smith vomiting? Suspicious.

Re: The simplest questions

D&C 77:6 says the Earth has existed for 7000 years. I suspect there is a divide in the church based on this revelation from JS. It is obvious from science this is not true. I think you are right. I think 10-30% of most wards know Genesis is either metaphor or BS. I’ll bet 40-60% BYU faculty also k ...

Censorship in the LDS church

I think Mormons, especially TBM's are very susceptible to justifying censorship because they were raised in an environment where censorship was normal. "No evil speaking of the Lord's anointed" is subtle, but it is so pervasive.

Dallin Oaks and Charlie Kirk.

It's impossible to prove a negative" is a phrase I hear tossed around in debates and epistemology from time to time. It hasn't yet been proven true. ;) Curiously Dallin Oaks and Charlie Kirk have both used variations of this phrase to defend their apologetics. Oaks said in a speech to CES people ...

Re: The simplest questions

Mormon leaders have traditionally taught that Adam and Noah received the same oaths and covenants we get in the temple today. Pres. Nelson re-emphasized this in the 2019 Sunday morning general conference. If Noah had those oaths and covenants, and would presumably teach them to at least some of his ...
